After continually attacking the “fake news” throughout the first months of his presidency, President Trump will now not attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. This comes directly after he blocked CNN, the New York Times, Politico, and the Los Angeles Times from a press briefing with Sean Spicer.
The dinner is an annual tradition that the President attends, however, this will be the first dinner since 1981 without the President of the United States. Ronald Reagan was the last president to not attend. Nevertheless, it was because he was recovering from an assassination attempt. Still, President Reagan delivered remarks at the dinner via telephone.
In a tweet this morning, President Trump broke the news.
I will not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!
The dinner is usually lighthearted, and a few jokes are cracked. The 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner was one of the most famous. There, it was President Obama that fired shots at Donald Trump, and roasted him for his “birther” issues.
Even though President Trump would have been able to fire some jokes himself, this year he will not attend.
